Cognizant of the fact that we are an energy intensive company, we have taken deliberate steps to manage the amount of energy consumed by our pumping operations. Over the last 10 years, KPC has gradually modernized its switchgear, replacing inefficient and environmentally unfriendly oil-filled switchgear with the cleaner vacuum technology. We recently introduced the latest energy saving Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) technology to replace the older inefficient technologies running the pumps. This has seen the company reduce the amount of energy consumed in its operations from a high of 188,805,020 kilowatt-hours in 2017 to the current 114,331,156 kilowatt-hours in 2022, despite the petroleum products pumped through the pipeline system increasing from 6.6 billion litres to 8.2 billion litres. This has achieved energy saving of 97,194,359.26 Kwh per annum resulting in reduction of 52,1933 tCO2 emission and cost saving of KShs. 875,999,807.43 per annum as per latest Energy Audit.
KPC recently commissioned a 225kWp solar photovoltaic power plant for the headquarter building with expected 60% reduction in energy consumption. Plans are underway to construct a solar photovoltaic power plant for one of the pumping stations to reduce the energy drawn the national grid, as a model to be gradually replicated in other pumping stations in the future.
KPC is also introducing solar lighting on its streets, and occupancy sensors for lighting control in its offices, beginning with the headquarter building.
